Clay Connection 2018

Design Team Member Patricia Krauchune recently served as a Makin's Clay® Ambassador while attending the Clay Connection 2018 event in New London, CT.   Pat brought Makin's® tote bags with product samples and a discount coupon for every attendee, plus a Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay Extruder® and Drill Adapter, and Makin's Professional® Professional Tool Set which were donated as raffle prizes. (One lucky winner is shown above!)  Pat tells us that as she visited the work stations of several attendees she indeed noticed several were using Makin's® tools!  Pat was able to talk with many attendees and discussed the many creative options of using Makin's Clay® while sharing samples of projects from our blog.  She took some great photos (and even took a brief video at the event which we will share if we can overcome our technical difficulties....)!  Can you spy the Makin's® products in some of these photos of the event?   It looks like a great event with many creative people in attendance.  Thank you Pat for doing a wonderful job serving as a Makin's Clay® Ambassador at this event!

In the above photos, we spy Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay Machines®, one with a Motor, Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay Extruders®, and what appears to be a Makin's Professional® Professional Tool kit!

Congratulations to Pat for winning two blue ribbons for her amazing Bottles of Hope!  Bottles of Hope originator Diane Asti Gregoire also attended the event!

These are just a few more glimpses of the event.

Hello my dear crafty friends and welcome to my Makin's Clay® January post.  This month we were challenged to make Bottles of Hope.  This is my very first time to make such a small project and I never ever covered any bottle of this size with clay.

Materials:

Makin's Clay® - Blue, White

Makin's Professional®
Makin's®
Instructions:

1. Roll the blue clay to the size that will cover your small bottle using the clay roller from the tool set.

2. Use the weave texture sheet to make the texture over your rolled blue clay.

3. Cover the small glass bottle with your textured clay and roll over the mat.  If the texture diminishes when rolling the bottle, simply roll the bottle over the texture sheet again.

4. Use small circle cutter from circles clay cutters set and make the bottom circle to cover the bottle.

5. Use Easy Mold Silicone Putty and metal wings from your stash to make your own mold for future use with the clay.

Work according to manufacturer's instructions that are in the putty box.

6. Cover the bottle to the edge with blue clay and make the top with the original cork inside a white piece of clay.

7. Cast the wings with white clay in your self made mold.

Cast the small owl in another mold (Plaid).

Cast the bow using the Christmas Nature push mold.

Cast the top piece with another Plaid mold.

Paint the dry shapes with acrylic paints (I used DecoArt Media Line).

This is the top piece over the bottle.

And the bottle with a cork and the closure.

I hope that you liked my small tutorial and will do some Bottles of Hope for anyone  who needs a bit of hope.  But don't we all need some?

Butterflies & Bulbs Bottles of Hope

Butterflies & Bulbs Bottles of Hope by Steph Ackerman

Hi everyone, Steph Ackerman here today with some new Bottles of Hope to share.

Note - Here is a bit more information about what Bottles of Hope are - Makin's Clay® is proud to have our designers supporting this worthy effort through the creation of Bottles of Hope featuring Makin's Clay®.

Bottles of Hope are small glass bottles covered with polymer clay and given to cancer patients. Supplies:

Makin's® Clay - Earth Tones, Yellow, White, Green, Red

Makin's®
Makin's Professional®
Beacon Adhesives - 3-in-1 Adhesive
Sizzix® Dies & Big Shot™ Machine
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists

Instructions:

I found these cute little light bulb bottles and knew they'd be perfect for the Bottles of Hope.  I wrapped them with white clay working the clay around the bottles and sealing the edges together.  Don't worry about the imperfections because those imperfections give the bottles character.  Use the mallet from the Tool Set to finish the edges around the light bulb.

I let the clay dry approximately 48 hours then added color with assorted Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists.

I wanted a base for each bottle, so I die cut hardened red clay using a Sizzix die (see my earlier post on how I prepared the clay).  I often die cut fresh clay, but I wanted to use clay I had already prepared.   I used Beacon Adhesives to adhere the die cuts to the base.

Next I selected an assortment of clay cutters.

Using the Roller, I rolled out yellow clay and the lightest color of clay in the Earth Tones collection.  Using one of the Texture sheets from Set H, I used the Roller to embed the design into the clay.

From the textured clay, I cut small butterflies.

Cut enough suns from yellow clay and enough stars from green clay to wrap around the bottles and adhere them with Beacon Adhesive.

Add butterflies randomly about the bottles.

And you now have some sweet bottles to give away to brighten the day of someone facing cancer.

Thanks for stopping by today.

Steph

"Birch Bark & Roses" Bottles of Hope by Madeline Arendt

"Birch Bark & Roses" Bottles of Hope
Designed by Madeline Arendt

In this post I will be sharing my version of what are called "Bottles of Hope" using Makin's Clay®, air dry polymer clay, instead of traditional oven bake polymer clay used to create these bottles.  These bottles were made while spending time with my children in the northwoods of Wisconsin. It has become a tradition to head up north after Christmas Day and celebrate the New Year together and enjoy all the beauty of the winter season along with a variety of  outdoor activities.

Note - Here is a bit more information about what Bottles of Hope are - Makin's Clay® is proud to have our designers supporting this worthy effort through the creation of Bottles of Hope featuring Makin's Clay®.

Materials:

Makin's Clay® - WhiteGreens/Black
Makin's Clay® - Cutting Mat
Makin's Clay® Professional Clay Tool Kit
Makin's Clay® Roller
Makin's Clay® Clay Cutters - Hearts
Bottles
Paint - Brown, Bronze
Brush
Paper Towel
Ribbon (optional)
Thin Jute Cord
Flower Embellishments
Beacon™ Premium Tacky Glue

Instructions:
  •  Roll out about 1/2 of the white Makin's Clay® on the white (non-stick side) of the mat to about 1/8" thickness or less.  NOTE: If making more then one bottle remix cut clay with more of the white clay and repeat process.
  • Lay the bottle onto the clay and wrap it around the bottle.  Place the clay so that the ends meet on the surface of the bottle.
  • Trim the clay away from the top and bottom of the bottle with the cutting knife.  Cut and trim the overlapping clay evenly.

  • Using the roller, smooth the cut edges.  Finish by smoothing with your fingers.
  • Press texture into the clay before drying.  NOTE: I used found pieces of birch bark to press into the clay for texture. (Madeline - we think this is a really neat idea!!!)
  • Mix green and black clay together in any proportion desired.  Roll the clay to form one or more bottle stoppers.  Allow them to dry 24 hours.  NOTE: Makin's Clay® will shrink slightly, so make the stoppers snug to fit the bottles.
  • Roll out the mixed green clay to about 1/16" thickness and use the heart clay cutters to cut shapes. Use a toothpick to create a hole it the larger hearts. Use the cutting knife to cut out letters to spell HOPE from the green mixed clay.  Allow all pieces to dry 24 hours.
  • Brush a thin coat of brown paint over the clay on the bottles and wipe off quickly.  Repeat the process if necessary.
  • Paint the green pieces of clay with the bronze paint.  Dry brush the bronze paint onto the clay on the bottles.
  • Glue the cut letters onto the front of the bottle.  Add a small heart if desired.
  • Thread jute in the holes of the hearts and tie onto the bottles.
  • Glue a flower embellishment or another desired embellishment to the top of the stopper.
NOTE: A soft decorative ribbon can be glued to the surface of the stopper before adding a top embellishment.
