MIXING MAKIN'S CLAY® WITH THE CLAY MIXING RULER™ TO ACHIEVE NEW SHADES

MIXING PAINT WITH MAKIN'S CLAY®

Artist grade acrylic or oil paints are recommended for altering the color of Makin’s Clay®.  Non-artist grade paints may be used, but the resulting color may not be as rich/deep as it would be with artist grade paint.

Makin’s Clay® offers the following instructions for using acrylic paint with the clay:
  1. Take 3cm diameter x 6mm thickness of clay of any basic color.
  2. Add 1 drop (approximately 6 mm diameter) of acrylic paint and knead well.
  3. Or use the Clay Mixing Ruler™ as measurement – take G size clay in any basic color, and a B size drop of acrylic paint.
My method is less exact, but easier in my opinion when dealing with larger amounts of clay.  To mix paint with clay, I place the desired amount of clay into a zip-loc bag, then add about 1-2 tsp of acrylic paint.  Close the bag and begin mixing the paint with the clay.   Once the process has begun, I find it easier to remove the clay from the bag and continue mixing in my hands.  The clay WILL get sticky while mixing in the paint, but it will return to it’s original consistency as soon as the mixing process complete and the color will not come off on surfaces once mixed. - Cindi McGee
