Halloween in a Bottle - Glow in the Dark!

Halloween in a Bottle by Leila Bidler

For this project you will need:

Makin's Clay® Glow in the dark
Makin's Clay® White
Makin's Clay® Black
(The quantity of clay depends on the dimensions of your jar!)
Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay Machine®
Makin's Professional® Cutting Mat
Makin's® Basic Tool Set
Glass vial or jar with cork top (any dimension you like)
Clay texture sponge
Black embossing powder
Acrylic Paint black
Small paintbrush
Small deco pebbles
Colored dry deco moss
2 eye pins
Small jewelry pliers

Instructions:

- In this tutorial we will use the awesome Makin's Clay® GLOW IN THE DARK to create a little ghost scene in a jar - the perfect decoration for Halloween!

- Take some black Makin's Clay® and roll it thru the widest setting of your Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay Machine®. Turn it 90° and run it thru the second setting. Now run it thru the first setting again with a texture sponge to get a nice deep textured base for our little Halloween / Graveyard scene.

- Using the jar itself or the top, whatever is more comfortable to you, cut out a disc of this textured sheet of clay, since during drying it will shrink a little bit it will fit perfectly on the bottom of your jar once it is dry.

- Mix some white clay with a tiny amount of black clay you can always add more to make it darker and add some black embossing powder to give it the look of granite.

- Roll out the clay on the thickest setting or your clay machine and cut off a long stripe, then fold it in half, now you have a piece of clay that is twice the thickest setting of your clay machine. Using the tools from your Clay Basic Tool Set cut out the shape of a basic headstone.

- Using a paintbrush or the tip of your finger moisten the base of the headstone with some water and wrap the stripe around it so the headstone can stand up by itself (photo 007)

- Make some markings in the stone, draw a cross, some symbols or the classic "R.I.P." on the headstone and put it aside for now.

- Let's make a Glow in the dark skull now! Take your Glow in the Dark Makin's Clay® and make a small ball, pinch the bottom part to form an egg shape.

- Using the small tip of your tool poke two roundish holes for the eye sockets and two small ones for the nose.

- Cut off the bottom sides to make a sharp jaw line and draw one horizontal and 5 vertical lines for the teeth.

-Put a drop of water on the black base and add the headstone and the tiny skull so they will stick while it all dries.

- Now we need a little ghost! Using the Glow in the Dark Makin's Clay® form an egg shape and pinch the sides to form two "arms."

- Insert an eye pin on the top of the head and carefully close the hole around it. It will get permanently stuck once your clay dries.

- Let everything dry for a day.

- When everything is dry use some black acrylic paint on the headstone, the skull and paint a little face on the ghost:

- Take the second eye pin and insert it in the bottom center of the jar lid. Since it is cork you just need to push a little, no need to drill holes or use glue.

- Suspend your little ghost from that eye pin, if he hangs too low, just push the eye pin further into the cork lid - the fun part is that using two joined eye pins the ghost will move if you just touch the jar.

- Now put the base with the headstone and the skull on the bottom of your jar, use some white clay to glue it in and sprinkle some small decor stones and colored dried moss all over. Decor moss comes in all colors, I used light green and orange, it is a very soft material that you can easily pick a part with your fingers or cut with a pair of scissors.

Want to see the ghost in motion?

Expose to a light source then turn off the lights and enjoy!

Ziggy Skull Dust

Ziggy Skull Dust by Carole Monahan

I love LOVE Halloween and anything that glows in the dark! I’m easily amused by things like that!  This is my tribute to David Bowie and his Ziggy Stardust!

MATERIALS:

  • Glow in the Dark clay (wooohooo) about 1oz
  • Tiny amounts red, blue and black

Pin back
Beacon™ Quick Grip contact cement
ImPRESSive putty (is a one part reusable mold making putty)

TOOLS:

Makin's® Lighting Bolt Clay Cutters
Makin's Professional®
  • Ultimate Clay Extruder®
  • Ultimate Clay Machine®
  • Professional Clay Tools®

I learned a valuable lesson only SCULPT once!
With Reuseble one part ImPRESSive putty I can do that easily!

I slowly sculpted a skull out of another type of clay using many of the Makin's®
professional sculpting tools. (I was sooo engrossed in the sculpting process I forgot to take photos along the way.) I took the original skull and made a mold with the putty. I then took the Makin’s® glow in the dark clay and pressed it into the putty. Note how I have a cookie cutter around the mold it helps when making the mold as well as when you impress clay into to make multiplies. I always slit an edge of the mold to make it easier to remove the piece.

Place a small amount black clay into the eye on the right side of the skull.  Roll red clay to setting #3.  Use the lightning bolt medium size cutter and cut the red clay out. Then line one side of the bolt with a tiny bit of blue clay.  Apply to the skull.

I used red clay to create the hair on the top of the skull.  I used the wire bristle attachment to create the texture on the hair.

For the classic mullet look, I extruded red clay using disc #2 and added it to the sides of the skull.

After the piece is cured about 24 hours glue pin on the back and get ready to delight others with your glow in the dark Halloween Bowie tribute pin!!

A Creepy Glow

Design Team Member Patricia Krauchune shares another creepy fun project made with Makin's Clay®!  A tea light inside the glass jar casts an eerie glow through the eyes of the glow in the dark clay skulls, and thought the flames.  Her signature steampunk style comes through too with the tiny gears she used to make the crow's wings!

A Night on the Town Spooky Witch Votive by Pat Krauchune

A NIGHT ON THE TOWN
Designed by Patricia Krauchune

I love Fall with all the leaves changing colors, the smell of the crisp air, pumpkin pie, and spooky things that go bump in the night. Come fly with me and make this easy, peasy witchy project.

Supply List:
  • Makin’s Clay® in Black and Glow in Dark
  • Makin's® Cutting Mat
  • Sizzix® Tim Holtz Alterations Townscape Die & a die cutting machine
  • Small plastic container
  • Battery operated tea light
  • 2 1/2" circle cutter
  • Loctite® Super Glue
  • Ranger Adirondack Alcohol Ink in Butterscotch
  • Americana Glow in the Dark PaintTM
  • Mini wooden clothespin
  • Beacon's™ Quick Grip, Tacky Glue
  • Recommended Makin’s® Tools:
  • Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay Machine®
Instructions:

Roll out 120G of black Makin's Clay® on the #3 setting on the Makin's Professional® Ultimate Clay COMPLETELY
Machine®. Let the clay dry

Using the Tim Holtz Alterations Townscape Die, run COMPLETELY dried clay through a die cutting machine. See picture as to how the cut out should look.

Glue the cut out townscape to the plastic container with the Loctite® Super Glue. Next tint the inside of the plastic container with the Butterscotch alcohol ink.

Using the Makin's Ultimate Clay Machine®, roll out 60G of Glow in Dark clay on the #1 setting. Then cut two 2 1/2" circles from the clay and stack one on top of the other. This forms the moon.

This step is optional. I painted the bottom of the container with Glow in the Dark paint to reflect more light.

Roll out a small amount of black clay on the #5 setting of the Ultimate Clay Machine®. After the clay has dried completely, using the pattern, cut out the witch on her bloom. You can use either a craft knife or small scissors to do this.

Using the Beacon'sTM Tacky Glue attach the
witch to the moon circle.

Glue the mini clothespin to the back of the moon with Beacon's Quick GripTM.

Clip the moon to the back of the container and you are done! Just put your tea light inside and watch her fly!

FYI: I used a tea light that changes colors to make a very spooky effect!
