"Earthtone Rainbow" Necklace by Andrijana Katavic

EARTHTONE RAINBOW NECKLACE
by Andrijana Katavić

Hello everyone!
I know! Rainbows traditionally contain a completely different color scheme than the earthy palette I used for this necklace. But, I used colors that I prefer more and which are better harmonized with my wardrobe. Chalk it up to artistic freedom. You are also free to use your favorite colors. I would like to see all color schemes that you used to make this necklace following my tutorial, so it would be nice if you send me a photos of your Rainbow necklace creations. You can send me photos in the message on the Makin's Clay® Facebook page.

MAKIN’S® MATERIALS LIST

Makin’s Clay® Earth Tones Colors Package (Peach, Olive, Straw, Persimmon, Light Adobe, Adobe Brown)
Makin’s Professional® Ultimate Clay Extruder™ (disc 5 + O-ring)
Makin’s Clay® Core™ Extruder adapters (2mm)
Makin’s Professional® Cutting Mat

OTHER NECESSITIES

Sharp scissors or X-Acto knife
Pliers
12 wire guardians
12 crimp beads
12 crimp beads covers
6 large jump rings
2 small jump rings
2 cord ends caps with loops
Leather cord
Jewelry wire
Magnetic claps
Duct tape
Beacon’s™ Quick Grip Permanent Adhesive

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1.
This is my technique for using the Clay Core Adaptors - Place Makin’s Professional® Cutting Mat on your working table. Unscrew the handle of Ultimate Clay Extruder™ to make enough space inside tube for the clay log. Unscrew end cap, and insert disc 5 in it, then place O-ring, and finally adapter (needle toward the opening of the end cap).

STEP 2.
Unpack Peach Makin's Clay® and made a log. Place log in the extruder, and screw back end cap with disc, O-ring and adapter.

STEP 3.
Extrude clay by twisting handle of the extruder. This way you'll get round tube of clay with a hole inside. Repeat whole process for other clay colors.

NOTE: It is important to clean the extruder (as well the disk, O-ring and adapter) after each color. Click HERE to learn how to do this.

STEP 4.
Leave hollow clay tubes to dry separately for about 12 hours. Then use sharp scissors or X-Acto knife to cut the part of tubes that come out first from the extruder (cracked ends).

NOTE:  It is important to dry clay tubes to avoid ruining the holes inside.

STEP 5.
Place all tubes of clay on the Cutting Mat following the arrangement of colors that you want, but so that the cut ends are aligned to one another. Bend all tubes in a U-shape and cut the other end of tubes in line with the first one.

NOTE:  Even after drying clay tubes will be flexible, so you'll bend them quite easily without fear that you will destroy the inner holes.

STEP 6.
String each tube on separately jewelry wire. Place wire guardians, crimp beads and beads covers on and leave to dry for another 12 hours. Bend tubes occasionally to stay curved.
both ends of wire. Place clay tubes close to one another

STEP 7.
Connect two clay tubes with one large jump ring (place jump ring through two wire guardians). Repeat the process to connect jump rings to other ends of tubes. String the leather cord on jump rings. Connect all ends of the leather cord with duct tape. Squeeze a small amount of Beacon’s™ adhesive in cord end caps with loops, and insert the ends of leather cord. Leave glue to dry, and then using small jump rings place the magnetic claps on loops. Your Rainbow necklace is ready to brighten your days.

Do not worry, we have a solution. This necklace is easy to make and does not require a lot of time, but it's quite effective and elegant with that subtle sheen. What's great is that you can wear it for other formal occasions too.

MAKIN’S® MATERIALS LIST

Makin’s Professional® Ultimate Clay Machine®
Makin’s Professional® Cutting Mat
Spiky (pointy) modeling tool from Makin’s Clay® Mixing Ruler™
Makin’s® 3 Heart Cutters

OTHER NECESSITIES

Sharp scissors
Soft painting brush
Hard painting brush
Clear tape
FIMO Silver leaf metal
FIMO Size for leaf metal
FIMO Varnish for leaf metal
Pliers
Silver chain
Jump rings
Clasp

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1.
Place Makin’s Professional® Cutting Mat on your working table. Unpack black Makin's Clay® and  roll on #1 setting on a Makin’s Professional® Ultimate Clay Machine®. With large heart cutter, cut seven hearts from clay tile. Use your finger to smooth clay edges.

STEP 2.
Poke holes in all hearts with spiky (pointy) modeling tool which is included in Mixing Ruler set. Note that three hearts should have holes in the top right, three in the top left corner and one in the middle.

STEP 3.
Leave all clay hearts to dry for about 12 hours.

NOTE:
For better results, faster and more evenly drying I suggest you to use drying stand. Find HERE how to make drying stand.

STEP 4.
After drying place the tape on six hearts with holes in corners. You can place the tape in various directions. Cut tape with scissors and then slide your finger on tape to make sure that it sticks well on clay.

NOTE:
Tape will help that edges of leaf metal are straight as possible.

STEP 5.
With brush apply a thin layer of FIMO size for leaf metal on larger part of hearts with tape, as well at all surface of heart without tape (the one with hole in the middle). Do not worry if size exceed over  tape.

STEP 6.
Apply silver leaf metal on part of hearts with size. Use a soft paintbrush to flatten the surface of the leaf metal. Leave to dry for about 5 to 10 minutes.

STEP 7.
With hard paint brush remove excess of silver leaf on edges of hearts.

STEP 8.

With brush apply a thin layer of FIMO varnish for leaf metal only on silver part of hearts. No worries if varnish exceed over tape. Leave to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

NOTE:

Varnish will protect silver leaf from possible destruction, so do not skip this step.

STEP 9.
Carefully remove the duct tape.

STEP 10.
Using jump rings connect hearts with silver chain.

STEP 11.
Place claps on end of chain and your new necklace is ready to wear.
