This month Makin's Clay® challenged it's Design Team members to select a Pin from our Tutorials & Techniques Board or our Polymer Clay Inspiration Projects Board and create a project using Makin's Clay® based upon the chosen pin. Our goal was not to have our designers simply copy of the projects, yet be inspired to perhaps try a new technique, or create a project style they might not normally have considered.
I love using the Makin’s Clay® Neon colors with black
clay. It takes me back to the 70’s and
all of the groovy black light posters I use to have on my walls. This project is a quick and easy Retro Bank
that you can make to save up for something special in the future. Maybe you’d like a blast from the past like a
lava lamp?
The idea for a bank was inspired by this clay cupcake bank from the Makin's® Polymer Clay Inspiration Projects board.
Supplies:
Makin’s Clay® - Neon - Yellow, Pink, Orange, and Green
Black
Recommended
Makin’s® Tools
Makin's®
- Texture Sheet – Set A - Sand
- Flower Cutter Set
- Circle Cutter Set – Small Circle
Other Materials:
Exact-o Knife
Flip-top Plastic Bottle (I used a cat treat bottle)
Method
Create a sheet of black clay by running it
through the Ultimate Clay Machine™ starting with the setting #1. Move the setting of the clay machine up one
setting at a time until the clay has been run through the #3 setting. The sheet should fit around the entire plastic
bottle.
Wrap the black sheet around the entire bottle.
Press the seams together.
Don’t worry about the seams showing.
They will get covered up in the next step.
Texture the black clay by repeatedly pressing the sand
texture sheet from the Texture Sheet Set A all the way around the bottle. This should help hide air bubbles,
fingerprints, and the seam.
Cut the flip-top off of the bottle.
Cover the lid with black clay and texture it. Use an Exact-o Knife to cut a slot in the
top.
Roll out all of the neon clays on the largest setting of
the clay machine. Cut out different size
flowers from the orange, green, and pink clay using the Flower
Cutter Set.
Cut out flower centers from the yellow clay using the smallest circle
cutter from the Circle Cutter Set.
Place a flower on bank.
Press the sand texture sheet repeatedly on each petal to give them
texture and round the edges. Place a
yellow circle in the center of the flower and press the texture sheet all over
it.
Repeat with the rest of the flowers and your bank is
done! Now, go get some money, drop it
in, and start saving!!!
